If you were truly a masochist, .docx
Even though I use OpenOffice I still usually save as .doc.
I think you need to confront the sad truth that the MS Office formats have become ubiquitous and there's nothing you can do to change that.
Please oh please oh please make this into a t-shirt!
*.doc* is a necessary evil sometimes. Me, I use OpenOffice, txt, rtf, even pdf if pushed. Freedom is the freedom to switch.
School stuff almost exclusively requires .doc*.
It hurts. So much.
even html can be read by msWord, .doc is NEVER required
