Not that it's any comfort, but I had a rather similar experience crossing the border in a Greyhound bus from NY State to Canada, to attend a hockey game, more than 10 years ago. My mistake apparently was saying blithely that I had a laptop with me. They went through my bag and found some old bills and such on the bottom too. They thought I was trying to emigrate to Canada or something. They held up the entire busload of people so they could question me. I was at the time short, innocent 18 year old female college student. (well i'm still female, but no longer the other things.)
At one point I thought of saying to them "and why would anyone in their sane mind want to emigrate to a stinky cold country with asshole officials?"... but I refrained.
I love Canada, but the border officials have little weenies. Including the girl ones.
